A family’s underused backyard reimagined into a multifunctional social hub designed to host large gatherings and provide private, cozy spaces.

This family home transformed its structure and landscape, reflecting the activities of a family deeply engaged in sports. As the homeowners renovated their house to suit their needs, our task was to reimagine the landscape to align with their lively family dynamics and community involvement.

The homeowners dreamed of a landscape that served their immediate family’s needs and became a hub for social gatherings, particularly for their children’s sports teams. Their vision was clear: transform the underutilized and poorly growing grassy yard into a dynamic, multifunctional entertaining space.
We began by eliminating the traditional turf backyard, replacing it with a substantial entertaining area designed to effortlessly host large groups. The space features a large dining area anchored by a striking circular fieldstone seat wall, providing ample seating without the clutter of extra furniture. This design choice maximized the usability of the space and enhanced its aesthetic appeal.
Adjacent to the central social hub, we introduced a secluded fire pit area behind the garage, crafted from a series of gravel terraces with irregular flagstone paths. This cozy nook offers an intimate setting for family gatherings or a quiet evening under the stars.
Recognizing the importance of privacy in proximity of neighboring homes, our planting strategy focused on creating secluded areas. Strategic placement of lush greenery obscured unsightly views, including utility poles, and shielded the entertaining spaces from nearby homes. This ensured privacy and enhanced the overall charm of the garden.
The design team was mindful of enhancing community interaction while maintaining private enclaves. The open layout encourages the family’s interaction with neighbors without sacrificing privacy. It blends openness and seclusion, catering to small family activities and larger social events.
